About This Site
A free calculator for PSAT scores, built because the numbers students actually need are scattered across three different documents.
What it does
Three things, each of which normally requires either a paid tool or a spreadsheet:
- Raw to scaled. Turn the number of questions you got right into an estimated section score and total, without waiting for the official report.
- Total to Selection Index. The National Merit number is not the total — Reading and Writing is weighted twice — and most students never see the arithmetic.
- Index to cutoff. Compare that index with the published Semifinalist cutoff for your own state, using the final numbers from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
How it is built
The site is a static site: no accounts, no tracking beyond aggregate analytics, no server holding your data. Nothing you type into a calculator leaves your browser — the arithmetic runs locally in the page.
The score conversion uses a smooth curve fitted to published score distributions and to the section-level means in the College Board's annual SAT Suite report. It is an estimate. The Selection Index formula and the state cutoffs are exact, because both are published numbers.
What it is not
Corrections
State cutoffs and score scales change every year. If you spot an error — a wrong cutoff, an outdated scale, a broken calculator — write to hello@psat-score-calculator.com with the page and the correction. Numbers that can be checked against a primary source get fixed within a day.
