When Do PSAT Scores Come Out?

The short answer for the October test is December. The longer answer depends on which PSAT you took, who you are, and how the College Board staggers its release.

Release windows by test

TestWhen it is givenWhen scores post
PSAT/NMSQTOctoberDecember of the same year
PSAT 10SpringAbout 4–6 weeks after your test date
PSAT 8/9Fall or spring, set by the schoolAbout 4–6 weeks after your test date
SATMultiple datesAbout 2–3 weeks after your test date

The October PSAT/NMSQT is the slow one: two months between sitting the test and seeing the number. That gap is not processing time on your answer sheet — it is the time needed to equate the form, run the National Merit calculations, and coordinate the release with schools.

Why not everyone sees it on the same day

The release is staggered, and three things move your date:

WhatEffect
Your roleSchools and educators get access roughly a week before students do
Your stateStates are released in groups across a window of a few days, not all at once
How you testedStudents who tested on a school make-up day can fall into a later group

So “PSAT scores come out in December” is accurate and also unhelpful if a friend in another state already has theirs. The College Board publishes the state-by-state schedule each autumn; your school's testing coordinator has the same information.

How to actually get your score

Scores do not arrive by email attachment. The sequence is:

StepWhat to do
1Make sure you have a College Board account, with an email you actually check
2Wait for the notification email, which links to the score report
3Sign in and open the report. If your scores are not visible, ask your counselor for your access code
4Read the section scores first, then the Selection Index if National Merit matters to you

The single most common failure is an account whose email is an old school address nobody checks anymore. Fix that before December, not after.

What to do in the two months before scores arrive

Nothing about the wait changes the score. But the wait is the cheapest window you will ever get for one specific task: reconstructing how you felt during each module. Which section did the second module get harder in? That tells you whether your first module went well, because the test adapts on the first module's performance. Write it down now; in December the memory will be gone, and it is the only signal the score report does not contain.

Then, when the score lands, do not read it as a verdict. Read it as a baseline, convert it on the calculator, and set an SAT target from there.

Questions people ask

What time of day do PSAT scores come out?
There is no fixed hour. Scores appear in accounts as each state's batch is processed, which typically means during the school day in that state. Checking repeatedly on release day will not make it appear faster.
Can I see my PSAT score before my school does?
No. Educators get access about a week earlier than students. Your counselor may know your score before you do.
What if my PSAT score never shows up?
Ask your school's test coordinator for your access code first — a missing access code is the usual cause. If the score is genuinely absent from the system, the coordinator can raise it with the College Board on your behalf.
